Scanning the roman underworld

I led an artistic workshops in 2022 given to 5th graders from the college of Bretteville-sur-Laize (France, Normandy), following their visit to the archaeological site in the ancient Roman cemetery of Quilly (4th century AD)  The theme of this session is centered on the imagination of the Greek  underworld and Roman funeral.

During the  sessions, the child were introduced to the practice of “cameraless” photography. I use a scanner as a black box.

We create monochrome vignettes starting from cut-out black paper silhouettes scanned on different colored backgrounds.

After a period of discovery, they were able to experiment with various materials (gold paper, objects, transparent and textured paper for misty effects) and create mysterious and evocative images.   There is no retouching or digital editing of the scanned file.
